The variety of trees to be found on Salt Spring is astonishing and capturing them in all of their glory is one of my favourite past times. The Arbutus stands out with it's vibrant colours and anthropomorphic shape and texture; the Garry Oak is a noble, gnarled tree that haunts the bluffs of the island like a creature from Poe or Hoffman; the Big Leaf Maple is impressive due to its girth and beautiful coverage as a mid-canopy tree...fall is made all the more exciting when these trees are about to shed their leaves; Douglas Firs, Cedars, Grand Firs and Hemlocks are other trees that you'll meet during your travels on the island and as you browse through this page I call the Arboretum. all photos ©2003 Michael Levy/Flat Earth Photography |
